Thank you to the guy who has taught a child how to ride a bike, play nice, throw a ball, share, bait a hook, shake hands properly, be respectful, root for the right team, grill a burger, mow the lawn, be proud, drive a car, tie a tie, use power tools, study hard and be resourceful. 

Thank you to the guy who has been there to catch you when you fell, witness your first words, change diapers, read you a story, walk you to school on the first day, play catch, dry your tears, help you with homework, cheer at your graduation, share a toast at your wedding and held your first baby.   

Thank you to the guy who is an example of honesty, compassion, faith, friendship, integrity, strength, family and love.

Whether you are honoring your husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle, nephew or friend this weekend, we hope he knows how grateful you are to have him as part of your life.  Not just this weekend but all year long.

Warm up the teapot, cut the crust off the pb&j’s and grab your hat.  It’s going to be a smashing day!

Snacks:  You have to be careful on what you choose to take along on the ride.  Choose foods that won’t make the kids queasy but will fill them up between stops.  Healthy foods like bananas, grapes and carrots are a good choice to have on hand.  For something a little more hearty, try bagels, cereal bars and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  Of course, you have to keep in mind the mess factor.  No one wants to sit on mushed banana or sticky jelly so choose foods that your kids can handle that won’t create a fuss.

Drinks:    Sugary drinks and juices will encourage pit stops more frequently and soda is just not good for kids in general.  You can’t go wrong with good ol’ water.  If your kids pallets require a little more taste, try flavored water like Fruit 2-o.  Throw a few in the freezer the day before and they’ll do double duty by keeping your cooler cold without ice packs.   

Travel Seating:  Hook your kids up with a spot that is comfortable for them.  Supply them with a small pillow and don’t forget their special blanket or stuffed toy.  Also, let them choose a few things to pack that will keep them content during the ride.  Use a small pop up cube or 1-gallon ziploc bag if space is tight to fill with odds ends like a special book, a kids magazine, an activity book or a small toy.  Kids love to draw so bring along a clip board with plain paper and colored pencils (crayons which can melt and leave you with a big mess if you’re not careful).

Today is the day that celebrates l♥ve and affection.  Many say Valentine’s is a greeting card consumer created holiday.  This would seem fair to say since 25% of cards sent are Valentine’s (according to the Greeting Card Association).  It’s still a nice reminder to let those you love know how special they are.  After all, what’s one extra day of sharing the l♥ve?

Think back to your own favorites you have received through the years.  Was it something that you had your eye on for a long time?  Was is something indulgent that you couldn’t justify the cost?  Was it something handmade?  Was it something that belonged to someone else that you’ve always admired?   Maybe it was something someone did for you.  

We’re willing to bet at least one of those special gifts was not costly or elaborate.  Maybe it was hand-crafted ornament from a little person.  Maybe it was a surprise visit from a long lost friend.  Maybe it was your favorite holiday treat made by a neighbor.  Maybe it was a holiday dinner you didn’t have to cook.  Or, maybe it was a warm hug from a child.

Happy Turkey Day!! 

With all the activity surrounding Thanksgiving, it’s easy to loose site of what is important.  It’s not the turkey or the pumpkin pie that is cherished, it’s the company that surrounds the dinner table. 

We know there is a great deal of effort that goes into pulling off a memorable  holiday but half the fun is getting there.  Get your kids involved, not only do they love to help and be part of the action, they actually can be quite helpful.   Give them the opportunity to stir the mashed potatoes or place the bread in a basket.  If they are old enough, let them set the table or make place cards to set on the dinner plates.  For smaller kids, a hand crafted paper turkey or holiday drawing of what they are thankful for not only keeps you focused on being thankful, it’s a wonderful gift for guests.  

However you choose to prepare for the big day, be sure to take a deep breath and cherish the time with family.  And when it’s your turn to share what you are thankful for before delving into the turkey, it won’t be… “I’m thankful for the day after Thanksgiving!”.

Happy Thanksgiving week!

We know that all the Halloween treats have been diligently inspected by parental units (minus the dangerous candy that mom and dad happen to love but do you give them back to your children to eat as they choose or do you allow a daily ration to last through November?  

On one hand, it’s fun to let the kids have at it on Halloween night but sometimes those tummy aches at the end of the day make you wonder if it’s worth it.  I suppose that also relieves the question of how long do you hold onto the candy before tossing it.

Sometimes, pooling the treats collected from all the kids is fun.  Put it in one large bucket and impost the ration method.  If your child doesn’t like to share, let them pick a few of the favorites and then put the rest in the family bucket.  You can even use the treats as a reward for doing something good.   

If you happen to collect more than you can handle, consider bagging some up to donate to a local food shelter, church or school.  If you still have candy left at Christmas (bravo to you!) use it to add to your gingerbread house.  M&M’s, red licorice and skittles make a great decorative addition to any holiday gingerbread house creation.

Whatever way you choose to ration out your trick-or-treats, we hope you are able to leverage in a little bit of quality family time while deciding how to divide them up.  Happy November 1st!
