Layer it Up for Spring…

Spring temperatures can be unpredictable.  Typically the mornings are still cool enough for a jacket but by the afternoon, it’s a heat wave.  We have one word to get you through the season… Layer. 

Layering clothing is a great way to transition from cool weather dressing to warm weather dressing.   Whether it be winter to spring, spring to summer, summer to fall or fall to winter, layering will get your kids through the season.  We can’t promise they won’t give you grief when you holler at them to grab a sweater as they walk out the door, but at least you’ll know your kids will be ready for what the day brings.     

Choose pieces that can be easily removed or adjusted throughout the day.  Girls can wear shrugs, hoodies, ponchos or sweaters over tanks, camis and tees.  On the bottom, she can layer leggings, footless/regular tights or jeggings under shorts, skirts and dresses.  Light weight flowing skirts look cute over jeans or rolled up trousers.  Slim fit skirts look best over leggings or tights.  The trendy boyfriend style jeans are perfect for this time of year.  Wear them full length at the start of the day and roll them up in the afternoon as the temperatures rise.  When in doubt, capris or cropped pants are the way to go.  Don’t forget to accessorize.  Hats, bandannas or a stylin’ scarf can do double duty by looking adorable while keep her warm during the cooler hours of the day.  

Boys clothes are fun to layer.  Look for light weight pants or soft jeans that can be rolled up as the day warms up.  On top, choose a long sleeve shirt under his favorite tee or tank.  To pull of a rock star look, put a long sleeve t-shirt under a short sleeve button down.  Of course he can also wear his favorite sweatshirt, sweater or jean jacket over short sleeves but think outside the box.  Remember that suit he wore at Easter?  Take the suit coat or a cool casual blazer and dress it down with a tee and jeans.  He’ll be the envy of the playground.

Layering is a great way for parents to be sure their kids are properly dressed during the transitional months, while kids are sure to be comfortable.  There are no rules when it comes to kids fashion (only that it’s age appropriate).  Mix and match patterns, styles and colors.  Fashion is a great way for kids to express their personal style and budding personalities.  Make it fun!
