Reports from the Obama’s recent trip to Europe & Russia are buzzing mainly about what Malia and Sasha were wearing — which, again, is J.Crew.
I actually expected more Obama girl fashion buzz than we’ve seen. This is really the first time their wardrobe has been back in the news since the inauguration. Is it just because they were wearing J.Crew again? Would there have been any buzz at all if they had been wearing something else? I wonder.
.
They appear to be receiving media criticism for “regularly endorsing J.Crew” (as is J.Crew in how they are handling the endorsements). But, I think its actually the media that is heightening the endorsement level vs. the Obama’s or J.Crew. Obviously the girls wear other clothing – but nothing else is ever reported. Since they wore J.Crew on Inauguration Day, as well as for several other public appearances during the campaign, I think the media will draw attention toward the girls any time they are publicly seen in J.Crew. I’m actually interested in what else they might be wearing!
I enjoy seeing the girls in J.Crew, Biscotti, and other clothing that is available to the American public. I enjoy the example they set for other girls by wearing accessible, well-tailored and fashionable clothing. The reality here in this market is that there are not many choices, especially for Malia, a tween. Think about it… where else is there to go?
Nice clothing is hard to come by for this age group. I’m looking forward to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale next week just for this reason. They are sure to have at least a few nice selections.
The tween market has been in the news a lot lately, with new stores like 77Kids, p.s. by Aeropostale, a new line from the Jonas Brothers, one from Miley Cyrus, etc. This is clearly an opportune market. And… its a great time for a current or new designer to step it up a notch to a level quality and appropriateness for Malia and Sasha public appearance. There is definitely a demand.

I couldn’t agree with your comments more! The fact is that they have to wear clothing, and people are interested in them in general, so people are going to be interested in what they wear. These girls are role models to millions of kids around the world, so of course every little thing that they do is closely watched.
J. Crew has stated that they did NOT issue a press release about the outfits; rather, they responded to press inquiries. Nothing wrong with that, as far as I can see. My tween store sent a gift package to the girls a couple of months ago. This was not a marketing move (we didn’t issue a press release), but a simple gift. If we do see pictures of the girls wearing items from our store, we might post them on our site, but that would probably be the extent of it.
The Juvie Shop has already noticed the increased demand for nice clothing in the tween size market and specializes in the 7-14 range exclusively. They can be found on-line at http://www.juvieshop.com.
Michelle – if you’re reading this, I’m sure they would have some nice things for the girls. They have many wonderful lines, such as Splendid, Sally Miller, Ella Moss, and more!
While the Obama girls are in the spotlight, it’s only natural to inquire on what they are wearing. If J.Crew is a favorite of the Obama family that’s great. At least it’s an American brand and who is more American than the President’s children? Being partial to one designer over another is human nature. We all have our favorites don’t we? In this media driven world, information is sometimes stirred up to create controversy when there really is none.
