This question is so right up my alley! I just wrote an article for eZineArticles.com about this Myth Busted: Do Cheap Clothes Really Cost Less? I find that resale on inexpensive kids clothes is very low. With the brands you mention, however, that's great! If you can get bag loads of quality clothing very inexpensively and still re-sell them for a fair amount, you will come out ahead when it comes to the total cost of dressing your kids.

With mini-Boden specifically, I always try to get at least 25% - 30% off and Free Shipping/Free Returns. Or, if shopping end of season, I buy enough items at 30 - 50% off such that when I add the $10 shipping, I'm still getting at least 30% off on my entire order. Take classic layered, long-sleeve tee for $28 as an example, which I bought for ~$20. I sold several of these for $7 - $8.50 last Fall (maybe I could have got more, because they were in good condition and Boden seems to sell well on the resale market). My cost of wearing the tops were ~$12.00. This would be a typical price at Target these days for the same type of top, but I couldn't re-sell it for much if anything.

Boden is difficult to get on sale at 50% off, but many higher-priced designer / boutique lines can be found at the end of the season at 60 - 80% off (that's the time to buy!). There is a good example of this in my SpendLess TV video on How to Dress your Kids for Less. :)

Thanks for the quetion - I love this topic!

I love the styles and colors of Mini Boden, but I have to admit, I rarely buy there. Because, frankly I can purchase a whole bag full of clothing (sale prices at TCP, Gap or even Gymboree) for the price of one pair of sale shorts at Mini Boden. Do you have any tips for when to splurge on the ritzier brands? I've heard that you should spend more on basics because they get more wear, but with kids clothes, it's rare to wear something out before it's outgrown. Should I splurge on shoes, accessories, or what?
