As a child, I can remember the pure excitement of back to school time. I recall vividly the smell of my new leather Buster Brown shoes while holding onto my clean and shiny metal lunchbox (Yes, I’m an old timer who had a metal lunchbox). The first day of school was typically a hot summer day but that didn’t stop me from wearing my new wool skirt, sweater and knee socks. It was, after all, the first day of school which required new everything!
That was then, today it’s a different story. Budgets are tighter and shoppers are much more conservative. Which leads us to our last poll which asked, “Did your child wear something new on the first day of school?”
Over 70% mixed new school attire with some old. I’m thinking your kids are much wiser than I was and most likely wore a new shirt with their summer shorts or skirt on day one. That’s exactly what mine did. It’s also possible that many have decided to wait and acquire clothing when the discounts are deeper or only when the need arises. In these tough economic conditions, new habits are taking shape.
The back to school shopping habits in my family have changed this year. We have high quality backpacks so they do not need to be replaced from year to year. Clothing gets passed down the the smaller kids whenever possible. Clothes that no longer fit are listed for sale on LoobaLee. We only purchase items that are needed after taking an inventory of each child’s wardrobe. This task alone has saved us from overbuying and has preserved valuable closet space too.
Remember, shopping wisely can create some wiggle room in your family budget. Keep an eye on our Children’s Clothing Sale blogs for coupons and promotions and shop LoobLee for new and gently used brand name apparel at well below retail.
