You know the tune, you recognize the face and kids want to look like them. Musicians have always plugged their music with logo tees and hats but lately a few are taking it a step further and jumping into the children’s apparel market. Here is closer look at the latest divas designing for kids just in time for back to school.

Miley Cyrus is starting a line with Max Azria for Wal-Mart slated to hit stores in August. In an interview in the latest issue of Elle magazine she claims to bring high fashion to “Middle America” with her “peasanty, flowy tops, hippie and loose and sexy, like boho chill mixed with English-rocker-esque. Plaids, studs, rips, cool colors.” If you can power through that quote, you’ll definitely want to check it out. While Wal-Mart is not the first place I’d look for high end children’s clothing, I’m sure it’ll bring a nice audience bearing the Hannah Montanta style.

Avril Lavigne, another singer turned fashion designer, will be outfitting little rocker’s this August. This will be an extension of her Abbey Dawn juniors line which premiered just one year ago at Kohl’s. This younger line for girls 7-16 will include layered tees, “friendly skull graphics” (if that’s possible), leggings, checkered patterns and a famed zebra hoodie complete with ears. She also just introduced a new perfume, Black Star that launched July 1 in Europe.
Beyoncé has already been designing girls clothing under the label Dereon. Although it hasn’t been as successful as she and her mother, Tina Knowles had hoped. They are revamping the line under the name Sasha Fierce for Dereon. Like Beyonce’s alter ego, the Sasha Fierce line will have a trendy edge with its inspiration mainly from the costumes from her latest tour but more subdued. Word is they will have lots of metallic and embellishment, an off the shoulder dress and black bodysuit..huh? While the description appears to be more geared toward high school aged kids and up, it is being plugged for back to school shopping. The current Dereon kids fashions like the one pictured here can be found at Dereon, Macy’s and Dillard’s.

Isn’t it an interesting trend Tina? I suspect we’ll see more of it over the coming year with singers and other celebrities.
I wonder how much of this is the singers themselves behind the interest — Or, is it the Walmart’s and the Kohl’s of the world seeking out partnerships with the big names? Or, is it the singer’s agents looking to further expand their brand by connecting with them designers and major retailers? Whatever the reason, its likely a sign there is a lot of money in this business.
p.s. What I prefer to see are celebrities “heartfully” partnering with specialty children’s designers to produce quality clothing sold in boutiques and higher-end department stores, such as the relationship between Tori Spelling and Hartstrings.
