One of my original inspirations for the Loobalee “Dress Your Kids for Virtually Free” philosophy was Gymboree Gymbucks. Gymbucks get mixed reviews in on-line conversations, and I think it is because they are frequently misunderstood.
RULE #1: Understand the Rules. I encourage every one who is serious about playing the Gymbucks game to read the full Gymbucks policy on-line. In addition, here are the most critical points to understand in order to optimize the promotion.
Coupons net you a 25% discount — NOT a 50% discount. To earn a Gymbuck, you must spend $50 or more. For every $50 you spend, you will earn one $25 Gymbuck. To redeem Gymbucks, you must spend $50 or more. For every $50 you spend, you can apply one $25 Gymbuck. This means, total cost of earning and applying one Gymbuck coupon is $100, and your net savings is $25 (or 25%).
Coupons can be earned on sale merchandise. This is key. You can earn & redeem Gymbucks on both regular-priced and discounted merchandise. You can also earn Gymbucks at Gymboree Play & Music centers.
Beware of “buying” coupons. Gymbucks are not legally transferable and each Gymbuck coupon is unique and can be used only one time. You must have the original receipt and/or code and pin number to use. It is a risky proposition to purchase someone else’s coupons — especially on-line via an auction or classified ad, but if it is fully in tact and is for the correct time period, it is usable. However, if you want to play the Gymbucks game, your best bet is to learn to optimize it and play fair and square.
Redeeming in stores: To spend a Gymbuck earned in a store, you must spend it in a store, as it doesn’t come with an on-line code and pin number. Your original receipt must be attached to the Gymbuck coupon. It must be in tact, in the way it was originally awarded at the store.
Redeeming on-line: To spend a Gymbuck earned on-line, you can spend it either on-line or in the store. You must have the unique Code and pin number that appears on your original receipt. If you take it into a store, it also must be stapled to the original receipt.
Proration: When Gymbucks are applied to your purchase, the discount is prorated across the items, rather than applied as a single discount on your complete order.
Returns before redemption: If you return merchandise on a receipt from which you were awarded a Gymbuck, and you drop below the $50 point — you will lose the entire Gymbuck.
Returns after redemption: If you need to return an item on an order or purchase for which you redeemed a Gymbuck, you can only exchange sizing for the exact item. If you need to return or exchange an item otherwise, you will lose the prorated portion of the Gymbuck that was applied to that item.
Lastly…don’t lose them! Gymboree will not replace a Gymbuck under any circumstances.
It’s all easier than it seems and well worth the effort! Stay tuned for “Using Gymbucks Part 2: The Strategy”.
